If you only want the best for your child, look no more because Dragon Scouting in Gan Eng Seng School is the BEST!
In this new age, Scouting isn't just limited to the males. Starting 2007, we will start accepting female Scouts into our unit with the blessing of the Ministry of Education. In fact, we already had female Ventures (16-18 years old JC/Poly Students) for a few years already.
Do take a look at our achievements over the years here or view our past activities through photos that have been uploaded in our gallery. Rest assured that you will be impressed!
Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any doubts or questions. If you have already decided to join scouts, fill up the form now! What are you waiting for?
Heard something about Scouting? Let us tell you what are the myths. (Note: The myths mentioned here are in Singapore context.)
The truth is that Scouting is as safe as walking down the road. The leaders and teachers in charge place safety as their prime concern, and parental consent is always sought for any outdoor activity. Furthermore, activities such as canoeing and abseiling and other specialised activities are carried out only by qualified instructors.
Those who have served National Service (NS) will realise immediately that it is not all about rifles. Skills such as these, being proficiency skills, can be picked up easily when one is in NS. But qualities such as perseverance, stamina, endurance, discipline, being able to camp out - these qualities cannot be honed overnight but need nurturing over the years. Scouting offers this. Many Scouts who have been truthful to themselves, and who have been diligent, go through NS easily because of these very qualities.
The Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scouts have been in existence in Gan Eng Seng School for more than 80 years, making this one of the oldest uniformed youth organisations in the school.
In that time, the Dragon Scouts have played an integral part in the school's CCA programme, offering adventure, discipline and a healthy outlet for the boys who have entered the portals of GESS.
In Scouting, boys/girls are divided into patrols of 6-8 members each; each patrol is given a unique sense of identity through its own unique name. In GESS, we have the Barracuda (Sea Scouts), Cheetah, Cougar, Jaguar, Leopard, Lion, Panther and Puma patrols. Each of these patrols is led by the Patrol Leader, a senior scout, who serves as a guide and mentor to the other members.
Inherent in Scouting is the need for an individual to test his/her mental resolve and endurance. Each patrol, by its very set-up, requires that each member play a part. In a camp, patrols camp together, look out for each other, and share a common vision of seeing their patrol being the best at anything. Together, all the patrols work to achieve the vision of the Scout Unit.
'Be Prepared', the motto of all Scouts, captures the essence of Scouting. Each member, while carrying out the activities as a Scout - canoeing, abseiling, rockclimbing, camping, outdoor cooking, hiking, campcraft, practising footdrill, doing community service... - is prepared for life. At their own pace, they discover the virtue of good honest work, whilst enjoying themselves, and realising their true potential.
Scouting is unique because it engages a Scout in a whole range of activities. In pursuit of these activities, the Scout attains various proficiency standards which reinforce positive self-esteem. Furthermore, Scouting is unique in allowing promising Scouts who set higher standards for themselves to aim to become President's Scouts, an honour which no other uniformed youth organisation can boast of, other than the Girl Guides.
